IATA · 3 letters
The code you see on your boarding pass. LHR, JFK, NRT — 9,500+ assigned worldwide by the International Air Transport Association.
ICAO · 4 letters
Used by pilots and air-traffic control. EGLL, KJFK, RJTT. The first letter encodes the region — E for Europe, K for the US.
Why YYZ is YYZ
