Codes, explained

IATA · 3 letters

The code you see on your boarding pass. LHR, JFK, NRT — 9,500+ assigned worldwide by the International Air Transport Association.

ICAO · 4 letters

Used by pilots and air-traffic control. EGLL, KJFK, RJTT. The first letter encodes the region — E for Europe, K for the US.

Why YYZ is YYZ

Canadian airports carry a Y prefix — left over from 1930s telegraph routing, when Y meant "yes, weather station here."

How do I search for an airport?
Type an IATA code like LHR or JFK, a city name like London, or part of the airport's name. Results appear after 2 characters. Search runs across our global directory of around 9,500 commercial airports.
Can I search by ICAO code?
Not yet — search currently matches against IATA codes (LHR, JFK), city names, and airport names. ICAO support (EGLL, KJFK) is on the roadmap. See "Codes, explained" above for the difference between the two.
Why can't I find a specific airport?
We index commercial and scheduled-service airports with IATA codes — about 9,500 worldwide. Private airstrips, military fields, and heliports without an IATA designation are intentionally excluded.
Can I see live departures and arrivals?
Yes. Each airport's detail page has a "Live flights" card with links to live departures and live arrivals. Live boards refresh every ten minutes and cover a 12-hour window centred on the current time.
What's on each airport's detail page?
The airport's name, IATA and ICAO codes, city, country, time zone, a location map, the routes and destinations served, and live departure and arrival boards.
How often is the directory updated?
Static airport metadata (codes, locations, names) is refreshed daily. Live flight boards refresh every 10 minutes. Routes and destinations re-sync daily.
